First Nations Portraits in the Galleries

Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO and Lynette Riley AO reflect on how Aboriginal people have been represented throughout the Library’s history.

A series of panel discussions exploring the role of libraries, the work of librarians, curators and archivists, and the stories behind collections. From influential women who shaped the Library to ongoing efforts to address gaps in collections, these conversations examine the challenges, achievements, responsibilities for libraries. Participants also ask what the next 200 years could hold for the State Library of NSW.

In connection with the Library’s 200th Anniversary and the display of new First Nations works, soprano and composer Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO and education leader Lynette Riley AO are joined for a discussion with their portrait artists Vicki Sullivan and Charlotte Lund. Speaking in the Paintings from the Collection exhibition beside their newly hung portraits, the panel will reflect on how Aboriginal people have been depicted, collected and presented throughout the Library’s history, as well as on the experience of being portrayed or portraying others.
